A most unusual illustrated Aboriginal art cover had a strip of six orange ½d Kangaroo stamps postmarked by an indistinct roller cancel from Sydney in 1951, and below the stamps was printed ‘HOP – HOP -HOPPING ALONG’. This somewhat ordinary mourning cover reveals a story of considerable importance to the entire British Empire, particularly the State of Tasmania. The 1d Mount Wellington pictorial (with a ‘T’ perfin) is postmarked with a roller Hobart cancel dated 18.5.10 7-0 P/ Tasmania and it was addressed to A.R. Fowler Esq. 50 Charles Street Launceston. I was intrigued by a mourning cover addressed to the Hon. James Smith M.L.C., “Westwood”, Hamilton-on-Forth which has a copy of the green 2d ‘side-face’ stamp, postmarked with a HOBART/ 3S/ FE 23/ 88 duplex. The Forth arrival back stamp was just barely legible (Figures 1 & 2). The seller had provided the following information; “1888 Mourning envelope used from Hamilton-on-Forth (early name for Forth) addressed to James Smith M.L.C.
The cover has a blue N.S.W. diadem ‘TWO PENCE’ as well as the orange and prussian blue 6d ‘REGISTERED’ stamp of New South Wales, the latter canceled by an indistinct ‘Rays’ postmark. The red printed ‘TWO PENCE’ Victorian stamp is postmarked with the GEELONG/ 17/ DE 24/ 94 and the barred numeral ‘2′, and the cover is addressed to Messrs Moule & Seddon, Solrs, 55 Market St, Melbourne (Figure 1). The reverse has a reception postmark of MELBOURNE/ 5A/ DE 2( )/ 94 as well as an illegible purple oval handstamp on the flap of another firm of Melbourne solicitors (Figure 2).
