A LETTER to BOMBARDIER H. WELLS, NOWSHERA, N.W.F. PROVINCE 1909

This fairly unique destination cover to a long-time troublesome area, now in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region,  is related to a series of conflicts starting with the Anglo-Afghan wars during the imperialist Great Game between the United Kingdom and Russia which led to the dismemberment of Afghanistan.

The front which was not seen is a real photo, b/w postcard of ‘The Blow Hole, near Flinders’.   The reverse shows it is an Australian card made by The Standard Post Card Co. sent from Janowe Street, Sebastopol to Bombardier H. Wells, 62nd Bty (Battery), N.F.A., Nowshera., N. West Frontier, India.  The brown-red on yellow paper 1½d stamp of Victoria is cancelled with a duplex BALLARAT/ AM/ 9 (N)O/ (--)-6-09 with a barred numeral ‘5'.  There is a fine reception postmark of NOWSHERA/ 7.-A,M./ 22 JL O9.  The legible portion of the message reads: Mr. Wells, I shall be pleased to exchange P.Cards with you, instead of Miss Hay.  Miss Sadie [illegible].  In addition there is a partial transit postmark of (TU)TICORIN/ 16 JY/ 09/ --.20 PM (Figure 1).

ADELAIDE to KINSHASA via LONDON, LISBON, BANANA & BOMA, CONGO

This is one of the most extravagant advertising covers I have written about, and it is also the third cover to the Congo I have recorded. I seem to have a fascination for this chaotic region which has had so much strife in its pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. The Australian Stamp Company, Adelaide, South Australia has resisted my many research attempts, but there is enough advertising matter to obtain an idea of its purpose: "Collections and stamps of all kinds, Bought, Sold, or Exchanged. Large Consignments of old Australians purchased for Cash...... Approval Sheets forwarded to Collectors upon Application..... 1,000,000 – COMMON PENNY AND TWOPENNY AUSTRLIAN STAMPS WANTED –1,000,000". A strip of five brown bantam Halfpenny South Australian stamps are cancelled with 2 duplex G.P.O. ADELAIDE/ 2/ JY 7/ 96/ S.A postmarks, and the cover is addressed to The Postmaster, Kinshassa (sic), Congo Free State, Africa. There is a faint blue transit postmark of BANANA (Congo) on the front (Figure 1).

AREQUIPA, PERU: A TALE OF A GOLDMINE, COCA LEAVES & COCA COLA

It is just over two years since I first saw a cover addressed to a doctor in Arequipa Peru, and it has taken me all this time to find enough, albeit very limited, information about the addressee. I had been attracted to the name Arequipa, since my success in buying a modest number of shares of Arequipa Resources, a goldmine in Peru, prior to its takeover by the giant Canadian Barrick Gold.

ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPE to DURBAN, NATAL SOUTH AFRICA

At first glance one might think that this was sent as a First Day cover for the 150th Anniversary of the Founding of New South Wales 3d blue stamp (part of a set of 3, the others being the 2d red and 9d purple). The stamp shows Captain Phillip at Sydney Cove 1788 and the stamp is inscribed with two years, 1788 and 1938, in the top left and right hand corners, respectively. The set was issued on 01 OCT 1937, whereas the stamp is postmarked 21 FE 38, and the event is celebrated yearly as Australia Day on the 26 January. All this produces a degree of date confusion, but the cover is certainly not a F.D.C. (Figure 1).

MELBOURNE, PER S.S. MOANA to WALLA WALLA, 1902 [USA]

Australians may have heard of the small New South Wales town of Walla Walla which is 26 km south-west of Culcairn, at least double that distance north of the border towns of Albury, N.S.W.-Wodonga, Victoria, and 554 km south-west of Sydney. But the fact that this letter set sail on the S.S. Moana should alert them to the fact that this Walla Walla was elsewhere. The first Europeans to pass through the area in N.S.W. were the explorers Hume and Hovell in 1824, but it was not until 1834 that the first squatters moved in.

MELBOURNE-LA SERENA via MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY & VALPARAISO, CHILE

The routing of this Victorian postcard has long given me concerns, and I still am not sure why it went via Uruguay to La Serena, Chile. The postcard is unique, for Victoria was the only Colony to accord postal commemoration of the new Commonwealth when a series of postcards was issued on the ‘eve’ of Federation. The design of the series featured a heading with the letters “AC” (Australian Commonwealth) above the coat of arms. The series comprised five postcards, each in a different colour, blue-green, grey-green, blue, lilac-brown and orange, and was issued between 20 and 22 December 1900 [Australian Federation was 1 January 1901]. It is believed that about 250,000 post cards were issued (Geoff Kellow 1990). On 9 February1904, an additional ½d had to be added for destinations outside Australia.

I considered this a rather unusual frequency for a relatively uncommon postmark, but the lack of significant information on the internet re the Settlement, made me put the stamps away (Figure 1).

QUONG TART’s TEA ROOM, QUEEN VICTORIA BUILDING, SYDNEY & HIS TRIP to CHINA

When Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived in New South Wales in 1810 he found the colony’s main landing place disturbed by the produce. Livestock and poultry of the daily water front market at King’s Wharf. He ordered the market to be moved to a more convenient location in a paddock bordered by George Street to the east, York Street to the west and the colon’s first cemetery on the south. A 2-storey building was built on the site in 1820, designated as a market, and its Druitt Street end had administrative offices. The building was originally known as the Queen Victoria Markets, and a larger building replace the former, and it was renamed the Queen Victoria Building (QVB) in 1918. I had its official opening on July 21 1898. The ground floor contained 58 shops, one of which was designated as a tea room.

When Quong Tart & Co. Tea Merchants wrote the following letter on 23 Nov.1898 he had not moved in for he gave his address as 137 King Street, Sydney. The contents of the letter sent to The Right Worshipful, The Mayor of Sydney were as follows: Dear Sir,

To make my rooms at the Queen Victoria Markets complete and in all respects suitable for my purposes it seems necessary to provide a Cloak and Smoke Room. Room No. 12 is the most conveniently situated but the rent asked for it is too high. Will you therefore be good enough to consider what concession you can make in view of all the circumstances so that if possible I may add it to my present tenancy. Yours faithfully, Quong Tart (Figure 1).
