ADVERT COVER: NASH CARS 1939 by OLDEST FORD DEALER in S. AUSTRALIA

A simple advertising cover for Nash cars posted in Adelaide 1 FEB 1939 sent to Nash Motors, Kenosha, Wisconsin, U.S.A. has an illustration of a Nash car, advertised by Maughan Thiem Motor Company Ltd, established 1912 in Adelaide, South Australia (Figure 1).

AMERICAN MOTOR CAR & VEHICLE Co., PERTH ADVERTISING COVER

The cover has considerable intrinsic interest on account of the advertising matter on its front and reverse, the type of postmark and the tax markings to warrant publication of the information it provides. The Western Australian stamp is the yellow 2d Swan issued on 4 Jan.1902 and it is postmarked with the duplex SHIP MAIL ROOM/ 11/ NO 21/ 03/ PERTH W.A. with the 8-bar GPO obliterator. It was received in New York DEC 27 and there are two tax markings : a large 'T' in a hexagon plus a DUE 2 CENTS in a circle (Figure 1).

HISTORY of HUDSON'S TERRAPLANE in DETROIT, ADELAIDE & BUENOS AIRES

This advertising cover for the 1936 Terraplane and Hudson, ‘engineered for safety’, has a Box number at the G.P.O. Adelaide and is addressed to the Hudson & Terraplane Distributor, Buenos Aires, South Australia. The address was added to in a red manuscript. Postage was paid by a green 1d KGV stamp as well as a red 2d Centenary of South Australia stamp 1836-1936, postmarked by a roller cancel ADELAIDE/ 1936/ 3 NOV/ 1030PM/ SOUTH AUSTRALIA and the slogan SOUTH AUSTRALIA/ CENTENARY/ CELEBRATION (Figure 1).

JOUBERT & JOUBERT PTY IMPORT & EXPORT & GENERAL AGENTS LTD

The advertising cover has a green stylized motif describing the company, with a circular Joubert & Joubert/ J &J/ PTY LTD and a diamond-shaped IMPORT/ EXPORT & GENERAL AGENTS as well as a return address of 575 Bourke Street Melbourne at the bottom of the envelope. It was addressed to The Superintendent, Manangatang District Hospital. Manangatang, Vic. The green 1d stamp had a roller cancel with a boxed MELBOURNE/ 4 PM/ 7 DEC/ 1936 (?8)/ VICTORIA associated with a slogan ‘CONVERSION / LOAN/ NOW OPEN’ (Figure 1).

MESSRS HOLDEN & FROST SADDLE MAKERS, ADELAIDE 1900

This 1900 registered cover had an additional 2d blue N.S.W. stamp affixed to the cover and the printed stamp was postmarked WILCANNIA/ OC 5/ 1900 [Type 1D (i), used between 1884-1906]. It was addressed to Messrs Holden & Frost, Saddlers, Grenfell Street, Adelaide. The reverse, not shown, had an indistinct Adelaide reception postmark (Figure 1).

THE AUSTRALIAN SOUTHERN CROSS CAR, BUILT JUNE 1933

A postcard appeared on Ebay auctions, and even though it was of very recent issue in 1990, its subject matter was about an Australian vintage car of an earlier time. The red car had a mostly green surround with a grey-stone building reminiscent of the University of Sydney in the background. The caption reads: The Australian made "Southern Cross" Car Test Model/ Built June 1933 (Figure 1).

YELLOW CABSof AUSTRALIA Ltd & WILLIAM PEARSON TEWKSBURY

This yellow Australian POST CARD with the printed green 1d KGV head (Die III) did not grab me, but the reverse was something different. The Printed-To-Private-Order postcard had a roller cancel of MELBOURNE/ 7 APR 27 11 AM with the slogan ALWAYS ASK FOR/ AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTS. It was addressed to Victorian State Wool Committee, 540 Little Collins Street, Melbourne (Figure 1).
